BOLT BEATEN!

Party pooper Gatlin snatches gold

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 05.08.2017

USAIN BOLT was expected to ride off into the sunset with yet another IAAF World Championship men's 100 metres gold medal draped around his neck. But Justin Gatlin's copy of the 'Bolt Retires In Style' script apparently got lost in the mail.

Gatlin emerged as the ultimate party pooper at the London Stadium here in London, England, yesterday, the American snatching gold with a splendid 9.92 seconds dash. Silver was snared by 21-year-old Christian Coleman, the rising American star outleaning Bolt at the line. Bolt was forced to settle for bronze in 9.95 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second slower than Coleman. Bolt was up against it from the start, the Jamaican sprint legend labouring out of the blocks to hand his rivals a decided advantage.

"My start is killing me," said Bolt. "Normally, it gets better during the rounds but it didn't come together. And that is what killed me."

Bolt fought tenaciously to regain lost ground, but ran out of track at the end. With all eyes focused on Bolt and Coleman battling it out in lanes three and four, Gatlin stormed to the line almost unnoticed to claim a most unpopular victory.
