Neglected Mikel Thomas at career crossroads

Early exits too for Walters and Williams

"I could work at McDonald's and make more money than I'm doing as an athlete. I'm trying so hard, but without support…" Mikel Thomas has represented Trinidad and Tobago with pride over the years. But following his first round elimination in the IAAF World Championship men's 110 metres hurdles at the London Stadium here in London, England, yesterday, the 29-year-old athlete felt alone…neglected by the powers-that-be.

Thomas is the national record holder with the fast 13.17 seconds run that earned him silver at the 2015 Pan American Games. Yesterday, he could only manage a pedestrian 13.98, finishing seventh in heat five and 37th overall.

The other T&T athlete in the event, Ruebin Walters also bowed out in the opening round. He was sixth in heat two in 13.63 seconds and 30th overall. "I just didn't have a good race," Walters told the Express, "but that's how it goes in track and field sometimes."
