London and the CPL effect

Trinidad Express :: 16.08.2017

THE LAST FIVE days of sport in Port of Spain and London have made for some riveting viewing.

In London on Sunday, there was a contrast of spectacles, but similar depths of emotion, depending on who you were.

First there was the sight of four fellows, Jarrin Solomon, Jereem Richards, Machel Cedenio and Lalonde Gordon, running and passing, running and passing with such heart and precision in the British capital's Olympic stadium, that no one on that track in the 4x400 metres could stop them. Not even sub-44-second anchor man Fred Kerley of the United States could repel their red surge of energy. There was such purpose, about Gordon's striding on that last leg, and calculation in the way he timed his final attack. It was a thing of beauty to watch, one of the championships' better races, and one with such meaning for people in these islands.

And shortly after, while still on that high, there was the contrasting sight of Usain Bolt's goodbye to track and field. There was the video montage of the sprint wonder's greatest moments through the years; the presentation of a piece of the track from the London Olympics, and then his final slow, dignified yet emotionally charged walk around the track; the stopping and kneeling at the 200 and 100 metres starting lines and finally, the slow spreading of the feet and stretching out of the left hand for his signature "Signal To the World."
