T&T quarter-miler Darren Alfred put together a good race to progress to the next round in the men's 400 metres event at the 29th Summer Universiade yesterday in Taipei City, Taiwan.

Alfred of the University of T&T crossed in 47.18 seconds to win the third heat of round one and advanced with the ninth fastest time of the 24 qualifiers. He will race in the third semifinal heat today. The first two in each heat automatically qualifies and the next two fastest move on to the final.

Local sprinter Moriba Morain also made a promising start in the men's 100m dash, running in lane two the Wiley College student clocked 10.34 seconds to win the fifth of 10 heats to be one of the automatic qualifiers to advance to round two.

However, his teammate Micah Ballantyne, who lined up in lane one in the opening heat, placed fifth in 10.87, not quick enough to progress to the next round.

Morain later faced the starter in lane seven of the first heat but did not advance to the semifinals, as he did not finish the race.

Late yesterday, all three of T&T table tennis players were to be in action with Brittany Joseph and Arun Roopnarine combining to take on German team Gianluca Walther and Yoko Imamura in the mixed doubles. Later in the women's doubles, Joseph was to partner with Catherine Spicer against Vineta Beanovica and Viktorija Majorova of Latvia.
