T&T's Dan-Neil Telesford missed out on a medal in the men's 200 metres event, placing fifth in the final yesterday at the World University Games (Summer Universiade) in Taipei City, Taiwan.

At the Taipei Stadium, Telesford clocked 21.03 seconds to follow to the line, winner Jeffrey John of France in 20.93, Canada's James Linde in 20.96, Slovakian Jan Volvo (20.99) and Ncincilili Titi of South Africa (21.00), respectively.

Telesford, a student athlete at Wiley College, advanced to the medal race after finishing third in 20.92 in the second semifinal heat earlier. Telesford is expected to turn his attention to the men's 4x100m relay carded for today where he will anchor the T&T team of Micah Ballantyne, Moriba Morain and Darren Alfred in lane five of heat two. The first in each heat and the next four fastest advance to the final.

Over on the field, Portious Warren's third attempt was just good enough to earn her a spot in the women's spot put final.

Warren heaved the iron ball 15.50 metres to place eighth in the group A to be among the finalists, who had to reach the automatic qualifying mark of 17.50 or be or at least among 12 best performers.

The University of Alabama student will have to come good to cop T&T's first medal at the 29th edition of the Games having to contend with the likes of Natalia Duco Soler of Chile, who took just one throw and heaved a season's best 17.86, Brittany Ann Crew of Canada (17.48m) and Germany's Sara Gambetta with 17.46m, who were the leading qualifiers in the group.

At the NTC Xinzhuang Gymnasium, T&T had mixed results in the table tennis competitions. Arun Roopnarine won his second singles match while Catherine Spicer and Brittany Joseph unfortunately suffered loses in their respective second matches the women's singles competition.

In the men's singles, Roopnarine defeated Nepal player Yugesh Rai 3-0 (11-1, 11-3, 11-6) to advance to the knock-out phase and will meet Japanese Masataka Morizono tomorrow.

Spicer lost to unbeaten Croatian Josipa Zajec 3-0 (11-2, 14-2, 11-7) and finished second in Pool 32 behind Zajec. The University of T&T (UTT) student has been drawn to meet Romanian Bernadette Szocs in the knock-out phase.

Joseph, another UTT student, saw her run in the singles competition come to end after falling to her second defeat in pool play, losing 6-11, 5-11 and 4-11 to Chinese Taipei's Chia-Chih Lin.

Today, Spicer and Joseph will now focus on the women's doubles competition when the local pair tackles Laura Gasnier and Judith Liu of France.
