Ahye just misses Diamond bronze

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 01.09.2017

Michelle-Lee Ahye just missed out on bronze at the Memorial van Damme IAAF Diamond League final in Brussels, Belgium, yesterday.

Trinidad and Tobago's fastest-ever female produced a powerful run to finish fourth in the women's 100 metres dash in 11.07 seconds.

Ahye earned US$6,000 for her fine effort, but would have taken home US$4,000 more had she been fractionally faster. Third-placed Blessing Okagbare also clocked 11.07, the Nigerian edging Ahye by just four-thousandths of a second.

There was a close contest too for the US$50,000 Diamond League title. Jamaican Elaine Thompson prevailed, the reigning Olympic champion getting home in 10.92 seconds to secure the big cash prize and attractive Diamond Trophy. Marie-Josee Ta Lou captured second spot in 10.93, the Ivory Coast sprinter earning US$20,000.

Ahye's best run this season came on June 24 at the T&T Championships, the Texas-based sprinter grabbing gold in 10.82 seconds—a new national record. One day later, she won the 200m in a season's best 22.50 to complete the sprint double.
