Nero outclasses Missouri 10K field

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 13.09.2017

Tonya Nero was the class of the women's field at the Plaza 10K in Missouri, USA on Sunday. The Trinidad and Tobago runner completed the 10-kilometre course in a fast 33 minutes, 57 seconds to finish well ahead of American Amy Regan, the runner-up in 34:55.

Nero was the only female to finish among the top ten in the race, the 28-year-old securing eighth spot overall. Zach Zarda emerged as men's champion, the American runner winning the 10K in 30:38.

Nero is currently based in Wichita, Kansas, USA, where she is training under the guidance of Kirk Hunter. Coach Hunter coached Nero while she was a student at Wichita State University. She enjoyed many successes for Wichita State on the American collegiate circuit, prompting her to return to Kansas.

Nero has been benefitting from Hunter's knowledge and experience. Sunday's 33:57 10K run was two minutes and 40 seconds faster than the 36:37 she clocked last December to win the Run Barbados 10K. That triumph created quite a stir, Nero battling from behind to snatch victory at the line—just one second ahead of shocked Canadian Olympians Lanni Marchant and Natasha Wodak.
