Kenyans dominate Venture 5K

Baboolal, Shukla shine for T&T

Kenyans Kenneth Rotich and Mercy Chepwogen were in dominant mood at the Venture Credit Union Cooperative Society 5K, in Couva, on Sunday.

Rotich completed a hat-trick of triumphs in the men's race, following up on his 2015 and 2016 successes with a comfortable victory in the 2017 edition. The 27-year-old runner completed the five-kilometre course in 14 minutes, 39 seconds for a huge cushion on Guyana's Cleveland Thomas, the runner-up in 15:46.

Shirvan Baboolal finished third in 15:47 to emerge as the top T&T runner. Veteran Curtis Cox was fourth in 16:01, the 49-year-old forcing his fellow-T&T athlete, 18-year-old Kriston Charles (16:10) to settle for fifth.

Chepwogen was in a class of her own in the women's race, the 2012 world junior champion at 3,000 metres getting home in 16:59. Apart from capturing the women's title, the 21-year-old finished 16th overall.
