Baboolal, Chebwogen bag Maritime 5K titles

Trinidad Guardian :: 16.10.2017

Shirvan Baboolal continued his fine start to the season by winning the Maritime 5K run in convincing fashion on Saturday out at the Nelson Mandela Park, Port-of-Spain. He completed the run in a time of 15 minutes and 44 seconds, ahead of George Smith of the T&T Defence Force, who finished 13 seconds further behind.

This is Baboolal's second successful run in three weeks. He opened the season with victory in the NAAA's One Lap Savannah run, and since then he has not looked back.

He told Guardian Media Sport after the race that he isn't satisfied with his performance. "I would say the same thing like two weeks ago, these guys are too close to me. I didn't feel so good today. My first and third mile were slower than I expected."

Kelvin Johnson finished third in a time of 16:08. He has been having a topsy-turvy start to the season having placed third in the one-lap savannah run and then winning the RBC Race for the Kids last weekend.

Among the women, with no Tonya Nero in this race, Kenya's Mercy Chebwogen easily won after posting a time of 18 minutes and six seconds. She finished tenth overall with Samantha Shukla securing and 19th spot overall.
