Cox fourth at South American 10K

T&T long distance runner Curtis Cox, placed fourth at the South American 10k Classic in Guyana on Sunday afternoon, falling well short of defending his title. Tonya Nero, T&T's sensation, failed to defend the title she won last year in the women's category.

The men's race was dominated by local runners, Cleveland Forde of Guyana won in a time of 33 minutes and 42 seconds, coming in second was fellow Guyanese Cleveland Thomas, who was nine seconds slower. Winston Missigher rounded off a hometown top three when he crossed the line in 34:05 seconds. Cox followed him to secure fourth place 13 seconds later (34:18).

Speaking to Guardian Media Sports after the race, the 49-year-old said, "The race was difficult for me because it began at 3:30pm so it was a tactical race to conserve energy for the first half, because of the heat and humidity. Also, I tried to pace myself evenly because I am still in recovery mode from the UWI Half Marathon."

Among the women, St Vincent's Linda McDowall easily topped the field in a time of 39 minutes and 50 seconds.
