Jereem opens fast - Millrose bronze for LalondeKwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 04.02.2018Jereem "The Dream" Richards produced a fast run in his 2018 individual opener in New Mexico, USA, on Friday. The Trinidad and Tobago sprint star clocked 20.52 seconds for top spot in the men's 200 metres event at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic indoor meet. The 20.52 run earned Richards third spot on the 2018 world indoor performance list, behind South Africa's Ncincihli Titi (20.45) and Nigerian Divine Oduduru (20.49). Richards was in dominant mood in Friday's 200, finishing well ahead of American Micaiah Harris, the runner-up in 20.83 seconds. Another T&T sprinter, Louisiana State University (LSU) student Akanni Hislop won the 200m "C" race in 21.15. Richards finished first overall, while Hislop was fifth fastest on the day. Richards enjoyed a breakout season in 2017, capping off an impressive campaign with 200m bronze and 4x400m gold at the IAAF World Championships in London, England. T&T/University of Alabama athlete, Ruebin Walters continued his fine run of form this season with gold at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, yesterday. Walters clocked an impressive 7.64 seconds for an easy victory in the men's 60m hurdles final. The clocking was just one-hundredth of a second outside the 7.63 personal best he had produced in Tennessee two weeks ago. University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) student, Asa Guevara seized silver in the men's 400m in an indoor best 46.57 seconds. And in the women's 200m, on Friday, Alabama's Mauricia Prieto finished third in her section and 11th overall in 23.94. At the Millrose Games in New York, yesterday, T&T quartermiler Lalonde Gordon bagged bronze in the men's 400m. The double Olympic bronze medallist got home in 47.24 seconds. Americans Michael Cherry and Vernon Norwood were first and second, respectively, clocking 46.46 and 46.75.
