Warren bags shot put bronze

T&T's Portious Warren continued her solid indoor debut at the University of Alabama (UA) on Friday, finishing third in the shot put event at Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson University Indoor Complex in South Carolina in USA.

The local shot-putter won the bronze in her third throw with a mark of 16.71 metres which ranks No 4 all-time at Alabama. The junior student/athlete also recorded two other marks which rank among the top-10 in UA history. Her other attempts measured 16.40 in the first, 16.59 in the second, 16.19 in the fourth, 16.14 in the fifth and fouled the last try.

Alabama junior Ruebin Walters was the No 2 collegiate finisher in the 60m hurdles in a personal-best and UA season-best 7.61 seconds, the third-fastest time in school history. Walters' preliminary time of 7.66 ranks No 6 all-time at Alabama.

He placed fourth overall, following Grant Holloway, a sophomore at the University of Florida, in 7.42, Olympic and World 110m hurdles champion Jamaican Omar McLeod (Nike) in 7.52 and Aleec Harris (Adidas), in 7.60, to the line.

All four runners bettered the Facility mark of 7.62. Holloway's time improved the NCAA record of 7.45, which was achieved by McLeod in Arkansas in 2015.

Another T&T/Alabama junior Mauricia Prieto ran a UA season-best in the women's 400m. Prieto was the No 4 collegiate finisher and fifth overall in a personal-best 54.09 in her first outing at that distance this season.

Prieto also ran the second leg for the Alabama B team and the quartet placed 10th in 3:39.56.

In the men's 200m, University of Kentucky freshman Dwight St Hillaire placed sixth, crossing in 21.07. Winning was McLeod in 20.76.

The women's version of the race saw another Kentucky athlete, senior Kayelle Clarke, crossed sixth as well in a time of 23.12. She was among the top finishers that improved on the Facility record of 23.14.

In the women's 60m dash, Clarke was second in heat six in the preliminary round to advance to the next round with a 11th fastest time of 7.49. She went slower in that round, 7.57, to place seventh in the third heat and was 20th overall.

Another T&T athlete Tyra Gittens was in action at the Clemson meet. The Texas A&M freshman opted out the women's 60m hurdles and focused on her field events.

In the high jump, she leaped 1.70m to place eighth while she was 12th in the high jump with her best measuring 5.96m.

Brooks lands 800m silver

At the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Alena Brooks, running unattached, copped a silver medal in the women's 800m invitational, clocking 2:04.09.

T&T had two sprinters facing the starter in the women's 60m in Zakiya Denoon of Louisiana State University (LSU) and Tennessee Tech's Lisa Wickham.

Denoon placed fifth in the final in a time of 7.31. The junior entered as the eighth fastest qualifier out of the second round in the same 7.31-clocking after winning heat seven in the first round in 7.34 while Wickham, a sophomore, was fourth in heat one in 7.59 to place 27th overall.

In the men's 60m dash, Quinn-Lee Ralph was sixth in heat three in 6.87 to be 21st overall. He progressed from the preliminaries after placing second in heat five in 6.84 to be the 14th fastest qualifier.

Akanni Hislop of LSU was also in the line up and he placed fifth in the opening heat in 6.88 to be 18th overall in the preliminary round, not quick enough to advance.

In the women's 400m invitational, Sparkle McKnight (Unattached), was third in section three in 53.71, to be 13th overall while in the women's long jump, Khemani Roberts, a junior at Tennessee Tech, was 21st with a 5.08m leap.

At the Fastrack National Invite at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York, Andre Marcano of Central Park Track Club (CPTC) New Balance bagged a bronze in the men's 60m final. Marcano clocked 6.78.

In the men's 60m hurdles, Aaron Lewis of Coppin State just missed out on a medal, placing fourth in 7.93. Lewis won heat fourth to move on with the fourth fastest time of 8.06.

His schoolmate, Coppin State senior Mark London was in the men's mile invite but he did not finish.

In Houston, Texas at the Howie Ryan Invitational, Jeunice Maxime, a Grambling State sophomore, was sixth in heat one in the women's 60m dash in 8.11, to place 32nd.

Maxime was third in section four in 26.92 to place 30th and her Grambling 4x400m relay team was fifth in 4:10.33.

At the Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee, Sarah Wollaston raced in the women's 200m and won the ninth heat in 25.15 to place 27th.

At the South Dakota State University (SDSU) Indoor Classic at Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex, Jada Barker of Bemidji State was seventh in section five in the women's 200m in 26.56 to be 42nd overall. In the 60m dash, the sophomore was third in the 13th and final heat in a time of 8.09, to be 32nd overal.
