Paralympic gold medallist Akeem Stewart is among a number of local athletes, who will this weekend, be aiming to book a spot on the national track and field team to compete at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia from April 4-15.

Stewart, who won double gold at World Para Athletics Championships in London last year, will be in action at the Pre-Commonwealth Meet being hosted by the National Association of Athletics Administrations of T&T (NAAATT) at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain, starting at 10 am both today and tomorrow.

The event is being used to provide a competition setting for athletes who have not already made the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard as well as a sanctioned meet in preparation for athletes who have made the qualifying standard but are unable to participate in meaningful competition.

Stewart only last month at the Joseph Payne Memorial Athletics Classic in Barbados, met the Commonwealth Games standard of 58 metres in the men's discus event.

The hummingbird medal recipient threw the discus 59.72m to win the event and also topped the shot put with a heave of 18.41m. The qualifying standard for that event is 18.50m.

Sprinter Kyle Greaux and hurdler Janeil Bellille are also among some 175 entries that will participate in 40 events scheduled.

Each trying to represent T&T and be part of the excitement at the Carrara Stadium where the athletics portion of the Games will unfold from April 7-14.
