Roberts snares pentathlon goldRachael Thomspon-King :: Trinidad Guardian :: 28.02.2018T&T's Khemani Roberts sizzled this weekend at the Ohio Valley Indoor Track and Field Championships in Charleston, Illinois in the United States. The Tennessee Tech University senior came away for the two-day meet with gold medals and a bronze. Roberts topped the women's pentathlon totalling 3,834 points. She prospered in the high jump winning the discipline with a 1.79 metres leap to earn 966 points and won the shot put with a 11.42m-throw for 623 points. She was second in the long jump with a 5.60m leap (729 points), fourth in the 60m hurdles after winning section two in a time of 9.02 seconds (906) and placed seventh in the 800m in 2:36.79 (610). Tennessee Tech athlete got her other gold in the 4x400m relay in the winning time of 3:45.92. Roberts also reached the podium after placing third in the women's high jump with her best attempt measuring 1.70m while in the long jump event she placed ninth with a 5.41m-leap. Aaron Lewis of Coppin State was also golden on Saturday at the Boston University Last Chance Qualifier, winning the men's 60m hurdles in 7.78m after advancing as the second fastest qualifier in 8.07. At the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championships in Texas, Kayelle Clarke of the University of Kentucky (UK) closed the two-day meet with two medals, two bronze in the women's 200m and in the 4x400m relay on Sunday. The senior athlete clocked a personal best 22.83 seconds to place third overall in the dash after she was runner-up in the second of two sections in the timed finals. Clarke later ran the anchor leg to help UK place third in 3:31.96 in a final which was won by Zakiya Denoon's Louisiana State University (LSU) in 3:30.85. The junior ran the third leg. The day before both Denoon and Clarke raced in the women's 60m and the former placed 11th in 7.33 while Clarke was 21st (7.43). Neither were quick enough to get out of the preliminary round. University of Alabama's Ruebin Walters, who placed second in the men's 60m hurdles in 7.69, returned to the track later to compete in the distance medley relay and his team placed 10th in 10:09.71. Also on the final day, Texas A&M freshman Tyra Gittens, who on the previous day placed fifth in a record-breaking 4,121 points in the women's penthalon, placed seventh in the women's high jump, leaping a personal best 1.80m. At the NSIC Track and Field Indoor Championship in Mankato, Minnesota, Jada Barker of Bemidji State placed 12th in the preliminary round in the women's 200m, crossing in 26.26. In the distance medley relay, Barker's team was 13th in the final in 13:47.27. Sarah Wollaston of the University of Central Florida competed in two events at the American Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. The freshman clocked 7.80 in the 60m to place 22nd and 20th in the 200m in 25.51 in the preliminaries. |
