Another World Indoors bronze for T&T quartermiler
Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 03.03.2018DEON Lendore repeated as the men's 400 metres bronze medallist at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England, yesterday. The Trinidad and Tobago quartermiler got home in 46.37 seconds.
Lendore was actually the fifth finalist to cross the line. However, Spaniard Oscar Husillos and Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic were disqualified for lane infringements after finishing one-two, and the other four finishers were promoted.
Pavel Maslak jumped from third to gold, the Czech Republic athlete completing a hat-trick of World Indoor Championship 400m triumphs with his 45.47 seconds run. Silver went to American Michael Cherry in 45.84.
Lendore passed another American, Aldrich Bailey Jr on the line for what seemed an inconsequential fifth-place finish. As it turned out, Lendore's big effort at the end was more valuable than he had envisaged, the
25-year-old claiming his second World Indoors 400 bronze on the trot.
Meanwhile, T& T will start in lane one in today's men's 4x400m final. The championship race is scheduled for 1.25 p.m. (T&T time), and will also include Czech Republic, Great Britain, Poland, Belgium and United States.
In the first of two qualifying heats, yesterday, Renny Quow, Jereem 'The Dream' Richards, Machel Cedenio and Lalonde Gordon teamed up for third spot in three minutes, 05.96 seconds. The T&T quartet progressed via the 'fastest loser' route. Lendore and Asa Guevara are expected to come into the team for the final.
T&T sprinters Keston Bledman and Emmanuel Callender were eliminated in the opening round of the men's 60m dash. Bledman was fifth in heat two in 6.79 seconds, while Callender clocked 6.80 for fourth spot in heat three.
Christian Coleman struck gold in the men's 60m final, the American sprinter bolting to the line in a Championship record 6.37 seconds. China's Su Bingtian seized silver in 6.42-a new Asian record. And American Ronnie Baker clocked 6.44 to claim bronze.
Mikel Thomas went out in the first round of the men's 60m hurdles. Running in the second heat, the T& T athlete got to the line in 7.84 seconds.
