Bascombe, Hosford punch tickets

ArticleYesterday proved to be a tough day for T&T teenage track and field athletes who were attempting to book their places on the national team for 2018 Edition of the Carifta Games schedule for the Bahamas.

Avindale Smith of Abilene won the Boys Under-17 200 metres sprint event in 21.29 seconds to dip under the qualifying time of 22.05 seconds on day-two of the NGC/NAAATT Carifta Games Trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

He lead his club to a 1-2 finish with club-mate Shakeem McKay second in 21-97 seconds, while Concorde's Jordan Pope was third in 23.35 seconds only to miss out.

In the girls half-lap run, Cougars Shaniqua Bascombe clocked 24.25 in the final to better the standard of 25.15 seconds set with Brianna Lord of Abilene second in 25.23 seconds.

While no one achieved the girls Under-20 benchmark of 24.20 seconds, Tyrel Edwards of Toco Titans was the only successful runner among the boys when he clocked 21.35 seconds beating the 21.40 time set for qualification.

In the field, Jaydon Antoine of Neon Wolves qualified for the Boys Under-20 Long jump event with a leap of 7.25 metres from a field of five participants. He bettered the 7.20m qualifying distance set.

Shot putter Konnel Jacob of Jaguars threw the 'Iron Ball' 16 metres flat to punch his ticket for the Games ahead of five challengers in which his closest rival was Burnley's Mikel Liverpool, who did 14.67 metres only to missed the qualifying distance of 15.90 metres.

Tyriq Hosford of Zenith has again booked his spot on the national team when he threw the "Iron Spear" 66.69 metres way beyond the 57.00 metres qualifying distance set.
