Jacob, Bascombe qualify in two events at Carifta trials

Shaniqua Bascombe bettered the girls' Under-17 200 metres standard twice on the second and final day of the Carifta trials, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

Already a qualifier in the 100m on Saturday, Bascombe clocked 24.97 seconds in the 200m preliminaries. She followed up with victory in the final in 24.25—almost a full second faster than the 25.15 Carifta standard.

Konnel Jacob also earned selection in two events for the March 31-April 2 Carifta Games in Nassau, Bahamas. On Saturday, Jacob qualified in the boys' Under-20 discus. And yesterday, he threw 16.00 metres to win the shot put, ensuring his participation in the event in Nassau.

Jacob and Bascombe were among nine athletes who attained Carifta standards on day two. A total of 18 qualified over the two days of competition. Avindale Smith would have been the third T&T athlete to qualify in two events. But he was robbed by the wind in yesterday's boys' Under-17 200m final.

Smith, a comfortable winner of the 400 on Saturday, topped the 200m field in 21.29 seconds. The clocking was much faster than the 22.05 standard, but was aided by an illegal 3.1 metres per second following wind. Shakeem McKay clocked a windy 21.97 to finish second in the race.

Tyriq Horsford, a three-time Carifta Games boys' Under-18 javelin champion, will be in Nassau to compete in the Under-20 javelin thanks to his 66.69m winning throw, yesterday.

Another Carifta 2017 under-18 gold medallist, Ianna Roach topped the girls' Under-20 shot put field with a 13.42m effort, and will fly to Nassau to bid for more regional honours. And Veayon Joseph threw 56.21m in the boys' Under-17 javelin to book his Bahamas ticket.

Che Saunders qualified in the boys' under-17 high jump with a 1.88m clearance. He was joined on the team by Jaydon Antoine, who produced a 7.25m leap to triumph in the boys' Under-20 long jump. Also making the trip to Nassau will be Joel Andrews, winner of the boys' open octathlon with 5,113 points.

Tyrel Edwards battled to the line in the boys' Under-20 200m final in a successful bid to achieve the Carifta standard. He stopped the clock at 21.35 seconds to claim the top spot and a berth on the T&T team.

Adell Colthrust struck gold in the 2017 Carifta Games boys' Under-18 100m dash, and was expected to be among the Under-20s chosen for Nassau.

However, the reigning Commonwealth Youth Games sprint champion was not at his best this weekend, finishing seventh in Saturday's 100m "A" final in 11.07 seconds, and is unlikely to gain the selectors' nod.
