42 get Carifta nod from NAAA

Top athletes Tyriq Horsford and Ianna Roach will again feature in the Carifta Games looking to dominate in a higher age-group when the 47th edition of the premier youth event takes place from March 30 - April 2 in The Bahamas.

The duo was named by the National Association of Athletic Administrations of T&T (NAAATT) in a team of 42 athletes for the 47th edition of the track and field meet to be held at the Thomas Robinson Stadium, Nassau, where they will compete against the best track and field athletes in the Caribbean.

Horsford, last year's Under-18 javelin champion now reverted to an U-17 category, will go against competitors in the Under-20 category similar to Roach, who won gold in the girls U-18 shot put event at the previous Games in Curacao.

The Games will bring together some 500 athletes and 150 team officials from 26 countries in the Caribbean will see athletes compete in two age categories, U-17 and U-20.

Last year T&T improved on its medal haul winning won 22 medals - seven gold, five silver and 10 bronze- compared to the 2016 Games hosted in Grenada with a medal tally of 14 medals.

The Games consists of 65 track and field events including sprint races, hurdles, middle distance track events, jumping, throwing events, and relays in line with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) guidelines for junior athletes.

Since 1990 Team TTO has amassed 560 medals - 157 gold, 197 silver and 206 bronze, currently holding five Games records including Boys U-20 Hurdles champion Jehue Gordon's 49.76 achieved on April 4, 2010.

Lucretia Burns will serve as manager and Ronnell Barclay will assist.
