51 T&T athletes heading to C’wealth Games

Trinidad Guardian :: 21.03.2018

T&T will be represented at the upcoming Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia by a number of athletes who medalled at the previous edition of the event back in 2014.

Field athletes Cleopatra Borel and Ayanna Alexander, boxer Michael Alexander, as well as members of the 4x100 metres relay team Marc Burns, Keston Bledman and Emmanuel Callender and Lalonde Gordon and Machel Cedenio of the 4x400m unit were medallists in Glasgow in Scotland, four years ago.

Borel was one of three local athletes winning silver in Glasgow in the women's shot put. The others were Jehue Gordon in the men's 400m hurdles and Keshorn Walcott in the men's javelin, who are not on the current team.

The bronze medallists were both relay teams, Ayanna in the women's triple jump and Michael in the men's lightweight (60kg). He will again box in the same category.

Celebrated Paralympic gold medallist Akeem Stewart is also part of a 51-member team named by the T&T Olympic Committee, yesterday, who will be competing in 11 sporting disciplines also including aquatics, badminton, beach volleyball, cycling track, gymnastics, shooting, squash, table tennis and triathlon. Athletics account the biggest number of athletes on the national team, which has 35 men and 16 women.

Stewart will compete in two events, the men's shot put and discus throw.

Diane Henderson will serve as Chef de Mission.
