Tigers, Convent, Barataria shine at St George’s relays

St George's College may have just achieved its goal of bringing back track and field to schools and communities in T&T.

At its Sunshine Snacks-sponsored Relay Classic at the Barataria Recreation Ground on Friday there were outstanding performances from St Anthony's College's 'Tigers" Athletics, Holy Name Convent, Barataria Anglican and the host school St George's College, which finished second only to Holy Name and Abilene in the Girls and mixed relays events.

The event which caused the community of Barataria to grind to a stand still Friday, saw the Tigers Athletics being unmatched in the Under-14 division, sweeping both the 4x100 and 4x400 metres titles, while Barataria Anglican dominated the Under-10 and 12s Boys and Girls categories.

El Socorro North and St Joseph Government Primary also gave great effort to secure podium finishes in nearly every event they contested.

However, the girls from Holy Name created the biggest stir when they edged out their St George's counterparts in a gutsy sprint around the grassy tracks, despite the chant and cheers of schoolmates and supporters of the community.

The boys of Abilene ran a fantastic Under- 20 4x100 race, but were outdone by Tigers Athletics in the last 20 metres of the final leg to grab the gold medal in the fastest event on the day.

The highly anticipated mixed relays also lived up to the 'hype' and excitement it promised on the day, with St George's College and Abilene 'neck and neck' for the first two legs before Abilene pulled ahead for a comfortable victory in the boys Under-20 division, closing off a fascinating affair on the tracks.

Earlier Barataria Anglican also captured gold medals in both Under- 10 and 12 categories to stamp its dominance in that age group.

After the games Committee member Kwame James stated his willingness to continue to partner with Sunshine Snacks and other sponsors to expand the scope of the St. George's College "Relay Classic," not only to schools and clubs on the East/West corridor, but nationwide as well.

The event was also part of the Physical Education Internal Assessment for Form Six (6) students, said another committee member/student, Shivanand Ramkhalawan.
