Roach chases Carifta shot put repeat

Junior "Sportswoman of the Year" Ianna Roach will go for gold tomorrow when the 47th Carifta Games starts in Nassau, Bahamas. However, it will be thrower Veayon Joseph with the first chance to win a medal for T&T at the annual premier track and field meet.

Joseph will compete in the Boys Under-17 Javelin final from 9.15 am in the opening session of the three-day meet at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium.

Later, Roach will be aiming to duplicate last year's performance in Curacao when she captured T&T's first gold medal with victory in the U-18 Girl's shot put final, effectively opening the floodgates for team T&T's gold medal rush at the Track and field Championships. In this edition, she will throw in the U-20 age-group in session two.

Another field athlete will be in action also with Clarence Hannibal competing in the boys U-20 discus final.

Joseph, who threw 56.21 metres in the Boys' U-17 javelin to book his ticket at the Carifta trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain earlier this month, will seek to follow in the footsteps of Tyriq Horsford, who is a three-time U-18 champion in the event. Horsford has now graduated to the U-20 category.

Also in action in the morning session are heptathletes Aquilla St Louis and Safiya John, who will open their account in the first of seven disciplines, the 100m hurdles event at 9 am. An hour and half later, St Louis and John will test their skills in the high jump event. In the evening session, the pair will compete in the shot put and 200m.

Similarly Franklyn Stanisclaus and Joel Andrews will begin their quest for Octathlon glory in the 100m at 9.10 am and before lunch will look to leap their best in the long jump. Later they will look to score points in both the shot put and 400m.

Also in action in the opening session are sprinters Shaniqua Bascombe and Taejha Badal racing in the Girls U-17 category and Shakeem Mckay in the boys version of the race. In the U-20 division will be Ako Hislop and Tyrell Edwards in the boys race and among the girls are Akilah Lewis and Janea Spinks. All will be aiming to advance to the semifinals to have a chance to race for a medal this evening.

So too will be quartermilers Che Lara and Onal Mitchell in the U-20 age-group and U-17's Avindale Smith in the boys and for the girls Natasha Fox and Rae-Anne Serville.

Top
