Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 11.04.2018There was a rare sighting at the Carrara Stadium here in Gold Coast, Australia, yesterday. A Trinidad and Tobago athlete stood at the top of a Commonwealth Games podium, while the Red, White and Black was raised to the top of the tallest of three flagpoles, and a melodious rendition of "Forged from the Love of Liberty" on pan blared from the stadium speakers.
The athlete, of course, was Michelle-Lee Ahye, and the occasion was the women's 100 metres medal ceremony. The last time a T&T athlete was draped with Commonwealth gold was two decades ago at the Kuala Lumpur Games in Malaysia, where Ato Boldon blazed to victory in the men's century. Yesterday's flag-hoisting was a sight for sore eyes.
