Toco retains school title

Bascombe, Fox strike triple track championship gold

Shaniqua Bascombe of St James Secondary School and Point Fortin West Secondary's Natasha Fox were the outstanding girls' athletes each winning three gold medals at the Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships that was hosted by T&T Secondary Schools Track and Field Association (TTSSTFA) at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo yesterday and Thursday.

Bascombe sped to victories in the girls Under-17 100 metres in 12.21 seconds, 200m in 24.39 and 100m hurdles (14.58) while Fox landed the girls U-15 high jump, leaping 1.40m, 200m (25.27) and 400m (56.55) titles.

Both won medals for T&T at this year's Carifta Games in Nassau, Bahamas. Bascombe copped silver in the girls U-17 200m and both in the girls U-17 4x400m.

The pair along with Malika Coutain (Vessigny Secondary) were jointly named the top girls' athletes of the meet with 30 points. Coutain was victorious in the girls U-17 high jump and copped silver medals in the girls U-17 400m and 200m.

Jaden Kirton (Toco Secondary) took home the top boys' honours with wins in the boys U-15 javelin (46.45) and long jump (5.68) and second place in the discus (27.99).

Camille Lewis (Sangre Secondary) won the Over-17 1,500m and high jump, Konnel Jacob (Speyside High) was the boys O-17 shot put and discus winner, Christie-Marie Maharaj of Bon Air Secondary won the girls U-15 800m and 1500m, Joanna Rogers (St Francois) dominaed the girls O-17 400m and 800m, Tyrel Edwards (Toco Secondary) was the boys O-17 double sprint champion so too Shakeel McKay (QRC) in the boys U-17 category.

Cheziah Phillip (girls O-17 100m hurdles/200m, silver-100m), Jamaal Alexandaer (Matelot) boys U-17 shot put and Open Hammer, Dimitri Richards (Toco Sec) boys U-17 high jump and triple jump, Anderson Subero (Sangre Grande Sec) boys O-17 triple jumpand pole vault, Isaiah Gemon (Fatima) in the boys U-15 shot put and discus, Kayin Morris (Woodbrook Sec) in the boys U-13 100m and 200m and Shakeira Kirk (Pentecostal Light and Life) in the girls U-17 shot put and discus were double winners.

Otis Barker (Toco Sec) got gold in the O-17 1500m and silver in 800m, Kernisha Baptiste (El Dorado East-gols girls U-13 100m, silver -200m), Octavia Cambridge (Bishop Anstey-silver girls U-15 400m/800), Shania Le Maitre (Holy Nam Convent-POS-silver girls O-17 400m/800m), Keone John (St Anthony) got silver in the boys U-15 200m/400m), Timothy Frederick (Vessigny Sec-silver girls O-17 100m/200m), Tichard Mc Kellar (Trinity East-silver boys U-17 800m/1500m) all missed out on double gold.

Toco Secondary dominated the meet to retain the overall title with 413 points ahead of Speyside High (214), Pentecostal Light and Life (133.5), pint Fortin East (125) and Point Fortin West (109.5). Toco Secondary athletes were runner away winners of the girls division with 247.5 points leaving Northestern College (99) and Speyside High (95) behind and also took home top male school honours with 165.5 with Speyside (119) and Queen Royal College (109) behind
