Roberts strikes NEC gold

Kareem Roberts captured men's high jump gold at the Northeast Conference (NEC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Maryland, USA, on the weekend. The Long Island University (LIU) Brooklyn senior cleared the bar at 2.02 metres.

In an attempt to break his own Trinidad and Tobago record of 2.17m and the 2.18m meet record, Roberts asked for the bar to be raised to 2.19m. However, he knocked it down three times.

At the Charleston Southern University Tune-Up meet, in South Carolina, Odou Hazel struck gold in the men's 400 metres in 47.60 seconds. The Claflin University student also competed in the 200m, finishing second in 21.99.

At the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region I Championships, in Arizona, Cherisse Murray picked up two silver medals. Murray threw 15.28m for second spot in the women's shot put and 46.48m for the same result in the discus. She bagged hammer throw bronze with a 41.44m effort.

Murray's Central Arizona College teammate, Jeminise Parris seized women's 100m hurdles silver in 14.07 seconds. And Parris helped her school grab 4x400m gold in four minutes, 03.67 seconds. Central Arizona captured the women's team title with a huge total of 309 points.

At the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships, in North Carolina, Aaron Lewis clocked 13.89 seconds to claim silver in the men's 110m hurdles. Lewis was a member of the Coppin State University team that secured bronze in the 4x100m relay in 40.24 seconds.

Another T&T/Coppin State athlete, Mark London was 11th overall in the men's 800m in 1:53.76. London was part of the team that finished seventh in the 4x400m in 3:15.98. Coppin State finished ninth in the men's team competition with 37 points.

Lisa Wickham captured bronze in the Tennessee Challenge women's 100m dash. The Tennessee Technological University sophomore got to the line in 11.77 seconds.

In California, Ashron Sobers finished fourth in the Sacramento State Open men's 100m event. The Fresno Pacific University sprinter got home in 10.78 seconds.

At the NJCAA Region VI Championships, in Kansas, Iley Bruce clocked 4:01.36 for fifth spot in the men's 1500m. The Colby Community College student was seventh in the 5,000m in 15:56.13. Colby earned 43 points for seventh spot in the men's team competition.
