Golden Gittens breaks T&T heptathlon record

Tyra Gittens is the first Trinidad and Tobago athlete to break the 6,000-point barrier in the women's heptathlon. The Texas A&M University student accumulated 6,074 points to strike gold at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Tennessee, USA, yesterday, breaking Marsha Mark-Baird's national record in the process.

On Friday, Gittens clocked 13.21 seconds in the 100 metres hurdles, cleared the bar at 1.86 metres in the high jump, threw 12.82m in the shot put, and clocked 24.01 in the 200m. Yesterday, the 19-year-old athlete produced a 6.37m leap in the long jump, threw the javelin 36.71m, and returned a time of two minutes, 32.41 seconds in the 800m.

The 6,074-point total for Gittens was 112 points better than the previous T&T standard of 5,962, established by Mark-Baird at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

At the Meridian Community College (MCC) Relay Invitational Last Chance meet in Mississippi, on Tuesday, Meridian's Jacob St Clair won the men's 400m event in 46.65 seconds. Coahoma Community College student Ian Thomas finished second in the men's 100m in 11.06.

Sparkle McKnight clocked 52.62 seconds to seize silver in the Arkansas Twilight meet women's 400m event. She was third in the 200m in 23.73.

At the Tom Tellez Invitational, in Texas, Commonwealth Games women's 100m champion Michelle-Lee Ahye picked up 200m silver in 23.37 seconds. Wiley College student Jamoul Pierre won the men's 400m "B" race in 48.17. Deon Lendore was third in the men's 200m "B" race in 20.81. Nathan Farinha finished fifth in the same event in 21.58. Wiley's Michaela Neils was third in the women's 100m "B" race in 12.22. And Farinha clocked a wind-assisted 10.61 for seventh spot in the men's 100m.

In New York, Andre Marcano finished fourth in the Tom Farrell Classic men's 100m dash in a windy 10.58 seconds. Lalonde Gordon was sixth in 11-flat. Kadesh Roberts topped the men's 400m "B" race in 48.81.

And at a meet in Jamaica, Jonathan Farinha clocked 10.45 seconds for fifth spot in the men's 100m.
