Fast Frederick - Simplex athlete captures Junior Champs sprint double

Timothy Frederick completed the NGC/NAAA National Junior Track and Field Championship boys' under-20 sprint double at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday. The Simplex sprinter followed up on Saturday's 100 metres success with gold in the 200 in 21.13 seconds.

Frederick was followed to the line by Ako Hislop, the silver medallist in 21.23, and David Pierce (21.33). All three beat the 21.35 World U20 Championship qualifying standard.

American-born Iantha Wright captured the women's 200m title with a 24.05 seconds run--well inside the 24.20 World U20 standard. Ayla Stanisclaus was second in 24.37.

Shaniqua Bascombe clocked a wind-assisted 24.05 seconds to win the girls' under-17 200m final. On Saturday, the Cougars athlete triumphed in the 100m and 100m hurdles events.

Another Cougars standout, Karessa Kirton completed the Championships with four individual gold medals. Yesterday, she added girls' under-15 300m hurdles gold to the 100m (12.37), 60m hurdles (9.40) and long jump (5.19 metres) titles she secured on Saturday.

Kirton clocked 43.64 seconds in the 300 hurdles. She returned to the track to seize 200m silver in 24.79, behind 200/400 champion Natasha Fox, the Point Fortin New Jets athlete taking the title in 24.68.

Shakeem McKay earned top honours in the boys' under-17 200m event. The Abilene sprinter stopped the clock at 21.87 seconds.

Rae-Anne Serville added the girls' under-17 800m title to her 400 crown. The Memphis Pioneers athlete was in a class of her own in the two-lap event, getting home in two minutes, 17.60 seconds. Silver medallist Kaylay John clocked 2:32.75.

Jaden St Louis notched a rare double, the Cougars athlete winning the boys' under-20 800m in 1:57.08 and the 400m hurdles in 56.77 seconds. Justin Guy of Kaizen Panthers was impressive in completing a boys' under-17 hurdles double. Winner of the 110 hurdles on Saturday in 14.76 seconds, Guy was golden again in yesterday's 400 hurdles, the talented teen getting to the line in 57.78.

Zenith Tobago's Tyriq Horsford dominated proceedings in the boys' under-20 javelin. The reigning Carifta Games champion threw 63.85 metres for a huge margin of victory on second-placed Selvon Rochford (56.35m).

There was an impressive throwing double for Konnel Jacob. The Jaguars field athlete won Saturday's boys' under-20 shot put with a 16.39m effort. And yesterday, he threw 53.25m to top the discus field.

And Gyasi Boisson was in fine form in the boys' under-17 shot put. The Memphis thrower struck gold with a 15.53m effort.

Cougars captured the overall team title with 475 points. Memphis finished second with 370. Kaizen Panthers (337) and Abilene (194) were third and fourth, respectively.
