Greaux stays focus for 2019

The past track season has been one of the best years that Kyle Greaux has experienced and this has energised the local athlete to seek out even more success in the coming year.

"This upcoming season I expect to continue progressing and add more titles to our wonderful nation," said the national 200 metres champion, who on Saturday was celebrated by his local athletic club, Abilene Wildcats, picking up the top award.

Greaux was recognised as the "Athlete for the Year" at the club's awards ceremony at Jenny's Ranch in Demerara Road, Arima.

"I'm honoured having won the award as there were other athletes from our club who have represented our nation well this past season," said Greaux, who received the top award from Minister of Education Anthony Garcia.

In August, the sprinter struck gold in the men's 200m final at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Senior Track and Field Championships in Canada in August, diving under 20 seconds. He was also part of the bronze-medal winning 4x100m relay team at the NACAC meet, which took place in Toronto.

These performances followed up his success in June, beating clubmate Jereem "The Dream" Richards in the event at the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) Senior Championships in Port-of-Spain.

Greaux was honoured to be bestowed the award and acknowledged the people around him that have played major roles in his successes in the previous season.

"I'm thankful that the work my team and I have put in these past few years is starting to come together," said Greaux. "Everything in God's timing."

He was among the group of foreign-based Wildcats athletes that were honoured at the function for their outstanding performances including Richards, the Commonwealth Games 200m champion, IAAF World Indoor Championship 400m bronze medallist Deon Lendore along with his NACAC 4x100m teammates twin brothers Jonathan and Nathan Farinha, and Asa Guevara, who was part of World Indoor Championships 4x400m relay team that broke the national record.

Charles Branche, retired Director of Sports in the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, was in attendance and gave the feature address, advising the local athletes on the importance of setting goals.

"You can attain almost any goal you set out when you plan your steps wisely and establish a timeframe that allows you to carry out those steps. Goals that may have been seemed far away and out of your reach eventually move closer and become attainable," said Branche.
