Athletes in spotlight at TTOC awards tomorrow

Andrew Gioannetti :: Newsday :: 27.12.2018

FROM the people's choice to the unsung hero, athletes who have shone the spotlight on TT throughout 2018 will be recognised for their efforts tomorrow at the 25th annual TT Olympic Committee's (TTOC) Awards Ceremony.

The black tie event will take place at Hyatt Regency and will be aired live on television, online and on radio from 6 pm.

The TTOC has opted to keep the respective nominees unnamed to as to maintain an element of surprise ahead of and during the event.

One of the awards to be presented is the "People's Choice" which has been already determined by fans by the December 23 deadline. At that point, CAC Games cycling triple gold medallist Nicholas Paul held a strong lead.

Also set to be presented is the Alexander B Chapman Award which recognises outstanding contribution to sport and Olympism. It highlights achievements or contributions to sport by individuals or groups which epitomise the fundamental principles of Olympism as found in the Olympic Charter.

Chapman is a TTOC honorary life member and a lifetime vice-president of the Commonwealth Games Federation.

There are also the typical Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards, Junior Sportsman and Junior Sportswoman of the Year award and the Best Dressed award.

Last year's event was dominated by track and field athletes, with the winners including IAAF World Championship gold medal quartet Jereem Richards, Machel Cedenio, Renny Quow and Lalonde Gordon for Sportsman of the Year and Michelle-Lee Ahye for Sportswoman of the Year; Kalifa St Forte and Adell Colthrust for Junior Sportswoman and Junior Sportsman of the Year; and Paralympics world record-setter Akeem Stewart for Sports Personality of the Year. Richard picked up another award in 2017 as he amassed most votes for the People's Choice.

A new patron will grace the event in President Paula-Mae Weekes.
