Trinidad & Tobago National Athletics Records. The Best of the Best
Trinidad & Tobago has long been a powerhouse in athletics, producing world-class athletes who have set national and international records. From legendary sprinters to record-breaking throwers, these athletes have left their mark on Trinidadian sports history. The National Association of Athletics Administrations of Trinidad & Tobago (NAAATT) keeps track of the country’s top performances, recognizing the best in track and field across various events.
Men’s Records
Trinidad & Tobago is known for its speed, with some of the fastest sprinters in the world hailing from this Caribbean nation. Richard Thompson holds the national record for the 100 meters with a blazing 9.82 seconds, set at the National Championships in 2014. The 200m record belongs to Ato Boldon, who clocked an impressive 19.77 seconds back in 1997.
When it comes to 400 meters, Machel Cedenio made history with a 44.01-second performance at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, while Jereem Richards shattered expectations with a 43.78 run at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, setting a new national best.
Distance running may not be as popular as sprinting in Trinidad sports, but athletes like Ronnie Holassie have made their mark. Holassie holds national records in the 5,000 meters (14:12.01), half marathon (1:04:15), and marathon (2:13:03), demonstrating endurance excellence.
Hurdles, Jumps, and Throws
In hurdles, Mikel Thomas holds the 110m hurdles record at 13.17 seconds, while Jehue Gordon made his name in the 400m hurdles, setting the national best at 47.69 seconds at the 2013 World Championships.
Field events have also seen incredible performances. Andwuelle Wright owns the long jump record at 8.25 meters, and Keshorn Walcott, Trinidad & Tobago’s Olympic gold medalist, holds the javelin throw record at an astonishing 90.16 meters.
Women’s Records
Trinidad & Tobago’s women have been just as dominant on the track. Michelle-Lee Ahye is the nation’s fastest woman, holding records in the 100m (10.82 seconds) and 200m (22.25 seconds). In the 400m, Janeil Bellille leads with 51.83 seconds, while Alena Brooks is the fastest in the 800m (2:01.81).
Long-distance standout Tonya Nero holds multiple records, including the 5,000m (16:19.17) and marathon (2:42:58).
These records reflect the dedication, talent, and resilience of Trinidad & Tobago’s athletes. From sprinting legends like Ato Boldon and Richard Thompson to field event stars like Keshorn Walcott, Trinidadian sports continue to thrive on the global stage. As new generations of athletes emerge, these records stand as a benchmark for greatness in Trini sports.
With continued investment in athletics and the passion of the nation’s athletes, who knows how many of these records will be broken in the years to come?
