TRACK and field at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games has been shifted from the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago to the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo. The games will take place from August 4-11.

At a media conference on Friday at the TT Olympic House, Woodford Street, Port of Spain, chairman of the organising committee Ephraim Serrette said, "Originally, athletics was scheduled to be held at Dwight Yorke Stadium but the Hasely Crawford (Stadium) has been identified as the new venue for athletics. It is one of our main venues. It is a fantastic venue. It has a greater capacity and is easily accessible to more people given the location in the capital. This will mean more of the local community will come and enjoy the games."

Hasely Crawford Stadium and Dwight Yorke Stadium have been the most popular venues for local track and field meets in recent years.

With the change in venue, swimming, cycling and track and field will now be held in Trinidad and rugby sevens, fast5 netball, beach volleyball and triathlon will take place in Tobago. In Trinidad, the National Aquatic Centre in Couva and the National Cycling Velodrome, also in Couva, will be used.

In Tobago, Pigeon Point will host beach volleyball and triathlon will be held in Buccoo. It is not confirmed which venues will be used for rugby and netball.

Children will get the opportunity to get involved in the games in a mascot design competition. Children between the ages of six and 17 will have until January 1 to submit their design.

President of the TT Commonwealth Games Association Diane Henderson encouraged the participants to highlight the culture of TT through the mascot.

"As you all know what a mascot represents - that iconic figure or feature that is used to market any games. It will also represent TT and its culture and heritage. This is what we are hoping to get out of the competition and the engagement of youth will be brought to the games," Henderson said.

"The mascot is always an important part of any games and will generate excitement among young people across the Commonwealth and some adults."

Henderson said the organising committee is eagerly anticipating the games. "With under 250 days to go to the seventh Commonwealth Youth Games taking place in this twin-island of TT, the local organising committee is focused on delivering a successful and fantastic games for the youth of the Commonwealth."

A total of 1,000 athletes from 72 countries between the ages of 14-18 will participate at the games.

Serrette said beach volleyball will include 12 women's and 12 men's teams, fast5 netball will have eight women's teams and the rugby sevens will comprise six men's and six women's teams.

The logo for the Commonwealth Games was recently unveiled. The logo features the Commonwealth sport celebration mark in TT colours alongside a thumbprint symbolising how digital innovation and flexibility of use have become part of our daily lives through smart devices.
