Keshorn Walcott Sets Record at Trinidad & Tobago Championships
The Trinidad & Tobago Championships wrapped up with thrilling performances, headlined by Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott, who delivered a dominant display in the javelin throw, and Jehue Gordon, who fought hard to claim the 400m hurdles title.
Walcott’s Spectacular Return
Competing on home soil, Keshorn Walcott wasted no time making his mark. On his first attempt, he launched the javelin 84.84m, setting a new championship record and electrifying the crowd at Hasely Crawford Stadium.
- His second attempt also impressed, reaching 82.71m.
- Satisfied with his performance, he passed on his final four throws, having already secured victory by a massive seven-meter margin.
- While the distance was slightly below his recent national records of 86.20m and 86.43m, achieved in Rome and Birmingham, Walcott was still thrilled to claim his first win of the year.
Jehue Gordon Battles to Victory in 400m Hurdles
Unlike Walcott’s dominance, Jehue Gordon had to fight for every inch in the 400m hurdles final. Facing a tough challenge from defending champion Emmanuel Mayers, Gordon surged forward in the final stretch, crossing the line in 50.06 seconds, just ahead of Mayers at 50.24 seconds.
After the race, Gordon acknowledged the tough competition:
“These guys are hungry. I just had to focus, use my experience, and bring my ‘A’ game. The wind wasn’t ideal, but we all competed under the same conditions.”
With this victory, Gordon now sets his sights on the World Championships in Beijing, where he will defend his title:
“It’s not about times at championships. It’s about making it to the final and bringing home a medal.”
Notable Performances
The Walcott family had more to celebrate as Elton Walcott, Keshorn’s older brother, claimed victory in the men’s triple jump, recording a wind-assisted 16.40m and a legal 16.32m.
Meanwhile, Kyle Greaux continued to make waves in Trinidadian sports, winning the 200m final in a personal best of 20.42 seconds. On the women’s side, Reyare Thomas stormed to victory in a wind-aided 22.97 seconds.
In the women’s shot put, Cleopatra Borel delivered another dominant performance, throwing 18.46m to secure a comfortable win.
From Walcott’s record-breaking throw to Gordon’s determined victory, the Trinidad & Tobago Championships showcased the incredible depth of Trinidadian sports. With these athletes setting their sights on international success, Trinidad cricket, Trini football, and track and field continue to shine on the global stage.
