Borel, Alexander in solid warm-upTrinidad Express :: 03.07.2012Trinidad and Tobago athletes Cleopatra Borel and Ayanna Alexander continued preparations for the London Games with solid performances at the Jamaica Olympic trials, in Kingston, on the weekend. On Saturday, Borel won the women's shot put with an 18.28 metres throw. Zara Northover was a distant second, the Jamaican landing the iron ball 16.42m. In Sunday's women's triple jump, Alexander produced a 13.75m effort to finish third. Kimberly Williams jumped an impressive 14.52m for a big win, beating her fellow-Jamaican, 2005 world champion Trecia Smith (13.94m), into second spot. T&T's Emanuel Mayers was the fastest athlete in the opening round of the men's 400 metres hurdles. Mayers clocked 50.00 seconds to top heat three. However, with foreigners only eligible to compete in one round in track events at the Jamaica trials, Mayers did not have another opportunity to achieve the 49.50 seconds Olympic "A" standard he had targetted. In the women's 400m hurdles, T&T's Josanne Lucas fell short of the 55.50 seconds Olympic "A" standard, the 2009 World Championship bronze medallist finishing third in heat two in 56.63. Emmanuel Callender will travel to London as part of T&T's men's 4x100m relay squad. He wants to compete in the Olympic Games 200m event as well, but was unable to attain the 20.55 seconds "A" standard in Jamaica. Callender copped fourth spot in heat three in 20.89 seconds. And in the 100m qualifiers, he battled against a strong 4.7 metres per second headwind to win the fifth and final heat in 10.59. Aleesha Barber also chased an "A" standard on the weekend. Competing in the women's 100m hurdles, the T&T athlete finished sixth in heat two in 13.52 secondswell short of the Olympic qualifying time of 12.96.
