Hackett bags bronze in Boston

T&T's Semoy Hackett won a bronze in the women's 200 metres at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic in Massachusetts, USA, yesterday.

The Empire Club sprinter clocked 23.91 seconds to finish third overall in the timed final. The opening race was the fastest race in the 23 sections with with Americans Joanna Atkins (23.21) of Rekorton Elite and Jessica Beard (23.48), Hackett's clubmate, placing first and second respectively

Another T&T sprinter picked up a bronze on Friday, Michelle-Lee Ahye finished third in the women's 60m at the ISTAF Indoor track and field meet in Berlin, Germany.

Ahye crossed in a season's best 7.16 to follow German Tatjana Pinto (7.13) and Switzerland's Mujinga Kambundji (7.14), to the line.

At the Boston meet, Dawnell Collymore claimed a bronze medal as well partnering with her Monroe College teammates to finish third in the 4x400m relay in 3:52.57. Earlier, she placed 27th in the women's 800m in 2:16.20.

Ruebin Walters remains perfect in his senior year at the University of Alabama, sealing another gold medal in the men's 60m hurdles at the Bob Pollock Invitational at Clemson University Indoor Complex US on Friday.

It is third time in three meets this season that the Crimson Tide junior has won gold in the event, winning in a time of 7.70, which ranks as the fourth-fastest time in school history. Walters now owns five of the 10-fastest times ever run in the event at Alabama. He also advance with the fastest qualifying time of 7.76.

Yesterday, his schoolmate Portious Warren, a junior, copped a silver medal in the women's shot put with her best mark measuring 15.49m, her third attempt. She also had throws of 12.86, 15.48, 13.78, 15.24 and 15.15.

Another junior at Alabama, Mauricia Prieto was second in heat three of the women's 200m in 24.09 and placed ninth overall in the timed final while Reyare Thomas (Unattached) was 11th in 24.23.

Thomas also competed in the women's 60m the day before and placed 14th in 7.56 seconds.

On Friday evening at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Tyra Gittens of Texas A&M won a bronze medal in the women's pentathlon tallying 4009 points. She placed second in both the high jump (916) and long jump (816); was fourth in both the 60m hurdles (916) and the shot put (682); and earned 593 after placing seventh in the 800m.

Sophomore Akanni Hislop of Louisiana State University (LSU) ran a personal best 21.16 to win section four of the men's 200m timed final but missed out on a medal after placing fourth overall.

LSU junior Zakiya Denoon placed second in the women's version of the race in section seven in 23.61, to have the 11th quickest time.
