Joseph, Bailey won EM 5k runTrinidad Guardian :: 14.03.2018Jamal Joseph clocked 17 minutes and 19 seconds to win the fourth edition of the East Mucurapo Secondary School 5K on Friday morning. The past student finished ahead of East Mucurapo student Joseph Chase, who crossed in 18.03 while Ryan Joseph of St James Secondary was third in 18.13. Finishing fourth and fifth respectively, were East Mucurapo students and namesakes, Malachi Byer (18.25) and Malachi Celestine (18.36). Prior to this year, former student and stand-out distance runner Ashton Gill (men) and 14-year-old Janeil Bailey (women) were both twice crowned champion. Bailey pulled off her third consecutive victory this year, clocking 20.48. She has thus been her school's 5K champion while in Forms one, two and now three. She has also competed in open races with older runners and acquitted herself quite well. In the TTARP 5K last October, Bailey finished fourth behind the likes of Kenyan Mercy Chebwogen and T&T pair Celine Lestrade and Sjaelan Evans. The East Mucurapo Secondary 5K started and finished at the school and coursed on Mucurapo Road, Audrey Jeffers Highway, Maraval Parkway, Ariapita Ave, along Taylor Street and then back unto Mucurapo Road. Bailey finished ninth overall and well ahead of her schoolmates, Atalya Eadie who was second in 26.07, Saharra Williams was third in 29.50, Candice De Silva was fourth in 30.12 and Rianna Williams was fiffh in 31.29. All winners received medals supplied by Achievement Centre. The race was coordinated by Physical Education (PE) teacher Zico Kennedy with support from past teacher Ronald Sheppard and other staff members |
