New Records Set In Three Events During 2018

Only one of the three national records set in 2018 was done in the country.

It was the long jump of 8.23m by Andwuelle Wright during the national championships at the Crawford Stadium, bettering the old mark of 8.14m by Wendell Williams in Konigs Wusterhausen, Germany, back in September 1999.

The two other records, by women, were established abroad in Australia and the USA.

The first was by Aleena Brooks, 2:01.81 over 800 metres in the qualifying rounds of the Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast, Australia, replacing the 2:02.27 mark by Melissa De Leon in 2005.

The second was in May when Tyra Gittens scored 6074 points to win the heptathlon in Knoxville, Tennessee. Marsha Mark had set the previous record of 5962 points at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Among junior U20 athletes the lone record was set by Telena Murray who threw the javelin 50.60m, almost five metres more than the record of 45.77m by Natalie Dixon in 2002.
