New Records In Six Events During 2015

Bernard Linley Track & Field Retrospect by Bernard Linley :: 13.11.2015

Trinidad and Tobago athletes set new national records in six standard track and field events during 2015.

Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott bettered his own javelin record (85.77 in 2014) no less than three times with 86.20 in Rome (4 June), 86.43 in Birmingham (7 June) and then 90.16 in Lausanne (9 July) when he joined the 90 metres club.

In the hammer throw Emmanuel Stewart upped his own record (52.20 in 2012) when he reached 55.11 on 18 April in Baltimore.

Hurdler Mikel Thomas recorded 13.17, when taking the 110m hurdles silver medal at the Pan American Games in Toronto, to reduce by 2/100 second the record he had set in 2013.

The fourth record came in the men`s 4x400m relay when the national team improved on the old mark of 2:58:34 set at the 2014 World Relay Championships by running 2:58.20 to finish second at the Beijing World Championships (split times 44.9 Renny Quow, 44.1 Lalonde Gordon, 44.8 Deon Lendore and 44.4 Machel Cedenio).

Also in Beijing the women`s 4x100m relay team broke the old record (42.59 in 2014) twice with 42.24 in the semifinal (when Khalifa St Fort ran anchor) and 42.03 when finishing third in the final when Semoy Hackett was anchor. The first three carries in both races were done by Kelly Ann Baptiste, Michelle Ahye and Reyare Thomas.

The sixth record was set at the NACAC Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica, when Semoy Hackett was second in the women`s 200m with a time of 22.51 (4/100 second better than the record she had set in May 2012).

The oldest records on the books are now over 20 years: men`s 400m (44.21 by Ian Morris) and women`s high jump (1.93 by Natasha Alleyne).

Among U20 juniors the only new record in 2015 came from Jeminise Parris who raced over the 100m hurdles in 13.84, to better the 13.87 clocking set over the 84cm barriers in 2007 by Alicia Cave. Curiously, there had been just one new U20 junior record in 2014 also, when Machel Cedenio did 45.13 over 400 metres.
